Nepal, being one of the poorest countries in the world, has become a PRIME hotspot for procuring women for sexual slavery. The average income per capita is about $210 per YEAR! That’s a little above $.50 cents a DAY.
High poverty areas, such as Nepal, have been rolling out the red carpet for traffickers to come in and “buy” their precious “items” for less than $100. $100 for a child. Can you imagine selling off your child for less than $100 AMERICAN DOLLARS?
Some parents know the doom that lurks for their daughters, however, the monetary gain surpasses that of the loss of another mouth to feed. Others are tricked into thinking that their daughters will be heading off to good jobs, in which the trade off will benefit in the end because she’ll be able to send a bit of money home, every month, to help out the family.
Once obtained, the girls will be taken across the border to India. A dalal will collect the girls and sell them to a malik. The malik will then inform the girls that they’ve now acquired a debt in which they’ve got to work off, by having sex with any man who chooses them. If they refuse, they are raped, beaten and starved until they comply. If the girls attempt to escape, they are faced with a beating and monstrous punishments such as being sexually assaulted with a chilli paste laced broomstick. The gharwali will tend to the girl’s wounds up until she’s good enough to “work.” To numb the pain, the girls are given opium. Girls can be sold and resold many times during their lives having to pay debts over and over again. There have been stories of girls who have contracted HIV and were sent back to their families…
But before you rejoice, most families reject them because having HIV the women “bring shame” to the family and can not be married off.

If we can’t count on the families to value the life of their own flesh and blood, can you imagine the LONG road we have ahead of us to try and eradicate this despicable industry?
